Module 04 of 11

Installation & Setup

Lessons

About This Module

Time to get Docker running on your own machine. This module covers the two ways most people install it, and you only need the one that matches your setup.

Docker Desktop bundles the Docker Engine, the CLI, and Docker Compose into one app with a graphical interface, and it's the easiest way to get started on Windows or Mac. Check Docker's current licensing terms before using it at work, since larger organizations need a paid subscription. Docker Engine is the core daemon and CLI installed directly on a Linux host without the GUI, which is the typical setup on servers and CI runners.

Whichever you choose, confirm it works by running docker run hello-world. If commands fail after installing, check that the Docker daemon is actually running. Follow the lessons for your platform, then continue on to Basics of Docker.
