Module 08 of 13

Cloud Providers

Lessons

About This Module

Terraform and Ansible give you the tools to provision and configure infrastructure — this module covers the platforms you'll actually be pointing them at. It starts with cloud computing fundamentals: the difference between IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS, and a practical overview of the core services on the three major providers — AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.

From there it covers the building blocks you'll use on any of them: compute instances, storage and managed databases, identity and access management (IAM) for controlling who can do what, and the habits that keep a cloud bill from spiraling with cost management and optimization.

Watch the lessons in order, then continue on to Serverless & Cloud Patterns.

Cloud Computing Fundamentals: IaaS, PaaS & SaaS

The core service models that define "the cloud," what you manage versus what the provider manages, and why the distinction matters for your architecture.

02

AWS Core Services Overview

A tour of the AWS services you'll meet most often — EC2, S3, VPC, IAM, and RDS — and how they fit together.

03

Azure Core Services Overview

Microsoft Azure's equivalents to the core cloud building blocks, and where its service naming and structure differ from AWS.

04

Google Cloud Core Services Overview

Google Cloud's core compute, storage, and networking services, and the areas — like data and machine learning tooling — where it's often the platform of choice.

05

Compute: Virtual Machines & Instance Types

Choosing the right instance size and family for a workload, and the trade-offs between on-demand, reserved, and spot pricing.

06

Storage & Databases in the Cloud

Object, block, and file storage options, and when to reach for a managed database service instead of running your own.

07

Identity & Access Management (IAM)

Users, roles, and policies for controlling exactly who and what can access your cloud resources, following the principle of least privilege.

08

Cloud Cost Management & Optimization

Tagging resources, setting budgets and alerts, and common ways teams accidentally overspend — and how to catch it before the bill arrives.
