Every database will eventually lose data to a failed disk, a bad deployment, or a
mistaken DELETE. Backup & recovery is the part of
the job that decides whether that is a minor incident or a disaster, and it is one
of the most important responsibilities a DBA has.
You'll start with the backup types in SQL Server: full,
differential, and transaction log backups, and the
order they have to be restored in. From there the module covers
point-in-time recovery, which brings a database back to the moment
just before things went wrong. You'll see it done with
MySQL binary logs and with PostgreSQL's
pg_basebackup, so you can compare how each system approaches it.
With your data protected, you'll be ready for the next module, Security & Access Control, where you decide who is allowed to see and change it.
An introduction to the concepts behind backing up and restoring a SQL Server database. A good starting point before the hands-on lessons.
A walkthrough of restoring a SQL Server database using full, differential, and transaction log backups together.
A step-by-step demo of recovering MySQL to a point in time, using an XtraBackup physical backup and binary logs across two Linux servers.
A step-by-step PostgreSQL backup and restore using pg_basebackup, covering point-in-time recovery.
