Module 08 of 10

Game AI & Gameplay Systems

Lessons

About This Module

A game feels alive when the things in it react. Game AI is the set of techniques that lets enemies and characters make decisions: noticing the player, chasing, attacking, and finding their way around obstacles. It is usually far simpler than it looks, and a few well-chosen rules can feel surprisingly smart.

You'll learn the two ideas behind most game AI: the state machine, where a character is always in one state (idle, chase, attack) and switches between them based on what it senses, and pathfinding, where a character uses navigation data to move around walls and obstacles toward a target. The same patterns are also how you organize other gameplay systems, like player movement states or enemy waves.

With smarter enemies in place, you'll be ready for Audio, UI & Game Feel, where you add sound, menus, and the polish that makes a game satisfying to play.
