Most security tools are built for Linux and driven from the terminal. If you can move around the command line comfortably, everything that follows in this course gets faster, because you stop fighting the system and start working with it.
You'll start by setting up your own Kali Linux virtual machine, a safe lab that keeps your testing separate from your everyday computer. Then you'll learn the command line basics: moving through the file system and working with files. From there the module covers file permissions, which decide who can read, write, and run what, processes and how to inspect and control them, and pipes and redirection, which let you chain small commands into powerful one-liners.
With a working Linux environment, you'll be ready for the next module, Scripting for Security, where you'll turn these commands into automated tools with Bash and Python.
